Yes, there is such a thing as Indian arthouse film. “Inshallah Football” is one example. It tells the story of a child's dream gone to pieces with unembellished imagery. Basharat grows up without a father in Kashmir, an area that India and Pakistan are violently fighting over. Basharat's father has left his family to fight for Pakistan, and now his son must pay the price. Basharat becomes an exasperated captive of an unjust judiciary system that denies him the possibility of a career in soccer in Brazil.

The documentary “The Subtext Anger” asks why we experience emotions like desperation, stress, grief and anger. Which functions do these negative feelings have for us? How do they affect our mind and body? Different scientists discuss the topic soberly and curiously and arrive at fascinating results.

Kitsch fans, don't worry – you'll get yours! The festival will also host classic Bollywood flicks, as well as concerts, fashion shows and dance performances. And what would an Indian film festival be without candy colored costumes, flawless beauty and sugary sweet stories of heartache?

This is Berlin's first Indian Film Festival. Over 40 films from all genres will be screened starting on August 15, Indian Independence Day.
