Open Air Concerts

Festivals | No matter what the Weather

       19. July 2012

So what if it's pouring outside? That's no excuse to miss some of the best music festivals in and around Berlin. All you need is a sturdy pair of rain boots and a rain cape. Or you could just go naked - just remember Woodstock.

1) Berlin Summer Rave

Listen to the electronic tunes inside four different hangars of the formal Tempelhof airport, or head outside to chill and grill with a panoramic view of the gigantic Tempelhofer Feld. Musical acts include techno veterans Westbam and Marusha, as well as Moguai, Lützenkirchen, Daniel Boon and Aka Aka.

Flughafen Tempelhof, Platz der Luftbrücke, Berlin-Tempelhof, www.berlin-summer-rave.de, 7/21, 9pm, tickets 25 €

2) Greenville

Paaren im Glien is known for a high population of cows and horses, but not much else. It borders on Berlin's North-West, so that the first Greenville festival is looking to draw crowds from the capital. For a first line-up, the acts at Greenville ain't looking so shabby, with planned performances by The Roots, The Flaming Lips and Iggy and the Stooges.

MAFZ Erlebnispark Paaren im Glien,
Gartenstraße 1-3, 14621 Schönwalde-Glien, www.greenvillefestival.com, 7/27-29, combi-ticket 85 €

3) Bergfunk Open Air

With a line-up of eight bands, the Bergfunk open air isn't exactly what you'd call a big festival. But there's still enough variety to go around with Björn Casapietra, Alphaville and Keimzeit catering to older generations and Ohrbooten, Blumentopf and Pohlmann representing Germany's who is who of contemporary hip hop, reggae and pop.

Funkerberg, 15711 Königs Wusterhausen, www.bergfunk-openair.de, 10.-11.8., Kombiticket 45 €

4) Neue Deutschpoeten

Fritz radio has once again assembled Germany's most promising up and comers as well as old-established musical acts to perform together in one single night. The line up isn't final yet, but so far, Tim Bendzko, Max Herre, MIA, Marsimoto, The Koletzkis, Tiemo Hauer and Vierkanttretlager have already confirmed that they will head onto the stage at the IFA summer garden.

IFA Sommergarten/Messe Berlin, Messedamm 22, Berlin-Charlottenburg, www.dieneuendeutschpoeten.com, 9/1, starting at 1pm, tickets 38,70 €

5) Berlin Festival

After the Berlin festival had faced more than a few problems in the last couple of years (nagging visitors, acoustic problems in 2009 and the premature termination of the festival after the Love Parade disaster in Duisburg), it got its act together in 2011 and we're hoping things will stay that way this year. This year's performers include Kate Nash, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Friendly Fires and Paul Kalkbrenner. Also worth noting: The Art Village with over 60 artists and the biggest world wide Silent Disco Aftershow with over 10000 ear plugs.

Flughafen Tempelhof, Platz der Luftbrücke, Berlin-Tempelhof, www.berlinfestival.de, 7.-8.9.,
Festivalticket 81,40 €, combi-ticket incl. Club Xberg 97,90 €
