David Lynch Conference | The Art of the Real

Like harldy anyone before him, David Lynch manages to walk the thin line between experimental arthouse and hollywood film. But does anyone actually “get” Lynch? His aversion towards linear plot structures and rational narratives make it hard for most of us.

Instead of trying to find themes, logic or clear meaning in Lynch's films, the best way to shed some light on them might be to focus on their atmosphere, an approach chosen by the experts at the first European David Lynch conference.

Starting today, renowned academics from all over the world will come together to discuss the work of David Lynch within four different theme complexes (psychoanalysis, genre composition, intermediality, inter art). The experts will address the political dimension of Lynch's work as well as the films' aesthetic aspects and intermedial influence, which will include elements of different artistic genres. The only German language discussion will focus on the colors used in Lynch films, while others deal with animals in his films and his use of provocation.

The conference will be accompanied by screenings of rare Lynch short films and a Lynch-inspired exhibition.
