Tea Time
20. February 2012
(1) Chén Chè
This authentic Vietnamese teahouse celebrates a real Vietnamese teatime in the afternoon: Organic green tea is served with little treats from the house-owned bakery. Allergy-ridden tea lovers will be happy to hear that most pastries are gluten-free. If you're not gluten-sensitive, don't miss the sweet banana pie with peanut-chocolate creme.
Rosenthaler Straße 13, Berlin-Mitte, Tel. +49 30 28 88 42 82, www.chenche-berlin.de, open daily 12pm-12am
(2) Fräulein Wild
Anna-Maria Wild runs a proper “Vintage Cafe” with vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free cakes. She recently launched a breakfast menu.
Dresdener Straße 13, Berlin-Kreuzberg, Tel. +49 30 53 15 57 59, www.fraeuleinwild.de, Wed-Sun from 10am
(3) Franz-Karl
This little café/patisserie offers primarily Austrian specialties like Sachertorten and Mozartkugeln. “We try to lighten up the traditional recipes with fat-reduced ingredients” explains owner Nicole Böhme. Patissier Franz-Karl Kaufmann also makes pastries, strudel and candy.
Bötzowstraße 15, Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, Tel. +49 30 68 073 703, www.kuchenkultur-franz-karl.de, Tue-Sun 12pm-6.30pm
(4) Princess Cheesecake
Conny Suhr moved into Tucholskystraße with Princess Cheesecake in mid November. There are many different cakes, but even the champagne cake and lemon-cheese-tart have quark or cream cheese components.
Tucholskystraße 37, Berlin-Mitte, Tel. + 49 30 28 09 27 60, www.princess-cheesecake.de, Mon-Sun 12pm-7pm
(5) Sissi
Sissi is actually an Austrian restaurant – and one of the best in Berlin at that. And Martin Hartmann usually bakes his own bread. But recently, he has evolved into a half-time patissier and, even more recently, created a recipe for chocolate cake. The cake is called Sissi and tastes like coffee and blackberry jam. Rumor has it that the Sissy bakery will open its doors tomorrow, Tuesday, February 21 at 1 pm, right around the corner from the restaurant.
Motzstraße 34, Berlin-Schöneberg, Tel. +49 30 21 01 81 01, www.sissi-berlin.de, open daily 12pm-10.30pm
