EATING OUT

Les Valseuses | Cool Bistro

       10. October 2012

Prenzlauer Berg is not dead!

More than a few Prenzlauer Bergers shed a tear when the French pizzeria Pink Flamingo on Eberswalder Straße closed its doors. But they can take solace in the fact that its successor, a bistro with a small selection of French classics, might very well be able to live up to the Pink Flamingo legacy. At first glance, the place looks neither French nor bistroesque. The open kitchen makes it seem like a snack bar and the front of the dining area has been sparsely furnished with dark furniture. Turn the corner and you'll witness an even more barren-looking seating area with naked bulbs dangling from the ceiling above light wooden benches that look less comfortable than they actually are.

The owners used to run Themroc on Torstraße and are now successfully trodding on new paths in Prenzlauer Berg. They seem to know what they're doing: On a rainy Wednesday night, the place is packed. Guests huddle together underneath the bulbs, a German-French-English jumble of voices is in the air.

We start the night with rillettes of salmon as an amuse bouche followed by gratinéed goat cheese with a honey-pear chutney and a hearty paté with a side salad. After a flawless round of appetizers, the main courses manage to keep up the good work. The pre-cut point steak has been arranged like a fan on the plate next to a pile of homemade french fries. The perfectly roasted meat is butter soft and dark red inside. The grilled sword fish comes with crunchy root vegetables and an aromatic bouillabaisse sauce.

Everything coming out of the kitchen tonight is top notch. The waiting staff is attentive but not too intrusive. Les Valseuses is valid proof that Prenzlauer Berg hasn't served its time as a night life spot. Even if the clubs are dying out – you can always grab a great dinner.
