Schulkino-Wochen | Pushing the Limit

       21. October 2011

The eighth annual Schulkino-Wochen will take place from November 11 to 25 this year.

Kids should "gain the courage to push their own limits" says Johannes Schmid, who directed the SchulKinoWochen's opening film, “Wintertochter”. What better place to do so than at the movies? That's exactly what the initiators at JungedKulturService Berlin thought to themselves when they came up with the idea of inviting teachers and students to the movies for an extraordinary learning experience. Since audiovisual media have an increasing effect on children's every day lives, the project's founders plan to “make children and teenagers familiar with the medium itself, with its codes and effects”.

39 cinemas across Berlin have so far played host to a total of 50 feature and documentary films. These include literary film adaptations and independent movies from all over the world that hardly get played in Germany apart from the big festivals. Film seminars, talks with directors and workshops for teachers and students are also part of the deal. Focal points of the program are the “Berlin Film” event, Japanese film and movies surrounding the Wissenschaftsjahr 2011 (year of the sciences 2011). It is listed in its entirety, alphabetically sorted, on the Schulkinowochen website. (Teachers must register their students in advance for all shows and events).

The opening event for “Wintertochter” on November 11 will feature a screen play award ceremony, “Kindertiger”, and the movie's lead actress Nina Monka will also be present. But other films' high profile producers, directors, actors and screenwriters will also be on site for Q & A sessions.
