Those entering the TU's Bionics Instute for the first time will have a lot of questions. But the staff is skilled at channeling visitors' curiosity to a number of projects that will make sense even to dimmer contemporaries. On the day of our visit, experts explained the mechanics of the stork's wing.
A model stork's wing was placed into the wind tunnel of a wind machine. As a result, the wing began to spread apart, the wind bending it into a fan-like shape. This seemingly banal observation has inspired groundbreaking scientific progress. Looking at nature for technical innovation lies at the core of a disciplinary field called Bionics.
Realizing that the fan-like form of the stork's wing enabled a reduction of aerodynamic drag forces led to the implementation of multiwinglets – an upwards bend on the wings of commercial airplanes.
